Gauging

Dover’s Grand Union Gauge number was 12715, which was given to ‘Dover’ on 18th March 1937. These numbers were given to working narrow boats in order to gauge how much the narrow boat was carrying.

Gauging was worked out by measuring metal plates on the boat to the waterline. Plates were 6” forward of the stern and the front pair were 6” backwards from the cratch. The record weight to be carried is set by 2 large Woolwiches, which is 64 tonnes between them.
