We follow Alan as he journeys from Birmingham to London along the Grand Union Canal, uncovering along the way a secret
world of industrial archaeology, alternative life-styles and the passionate enthusiasm that still burns for Britain’s
industrial past.
The series features a unique collection of archive material reflecting the life afloat
of the working boatman in the dying days of commercial carrying. We also track down Dover’s
last working captain, now in his 80’s who agreed to share some of his memories with Alan.
