In a very ordinary street in Northampton there is an extraordinary house, with one of the most important
interiors of the entire twentieth century. It was created by the world-renowned architect-designer Charles
Rennie Mackintosh, for his client, a Northampton toy train manufacturer - W J Bassett-Lowke.
The house that Mackintosh built, the star of this series, was the only building he constructed outside
Scotland and the last major commission he completed before he died. In 1916 Mackintosh was asked to remodel
a Georgian terraced house at No 78 Derngate in Northampton. An ambitious young client and a tiny awkward
commission somehow combined to inspire Mackintosh to even greater levels of creativity.
Over the 15 episodes we'll see the complete transformation of both 78 and 80. We'll see just how his furniture
was put together; discover why it commands such high prices at auction and meet the people whose lives have
been taken over by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
This series provides a unique opportunity to follow the progress on one of the most exciting and ambitious
historical restoration projects in the country with an estimated cost of nearly one and half million pounds.
Antique specialist and historian Eric Knowles
will present the series. Hugely knowledgeable on the man and the period, Eric is a stalwart of the BBC's
'Antiques Road Show' and co-presented 'Going For A Song' with Michael Parkinson.
